Melon Grab

THE CLASSIC GO TO FOR GRABS

How to grab Indy

An Indy grab is where the back hand grabs the toe edge between the feet. The board is kept flat. This grab will feel more natural than the Mute due to the tendency towards riding with a more open posture.

Approach

Start directly behind the kicker at a point that will enable you to safely land on the table top or just over the knuckle. Re-create a funnel shape with your turns with a focus towards riding straight up the centre of the kicker.

Takeoff

Aim to be flat base as you travel up the kicker with your upper body aligned with the board. You have the option of maintaining that flat base or transferring the pressure slightly to your toes as you initiate a pop or ollie. You can ride up the kicker slightly lower than normal to reduce the travel distance for the grab.

Trick

Grab the toe edge between the bindings with your back hand.

Regular Trick

Landing

Be ready to absorb the landing with a focus towards a soft landing on the toe edge to enable control and then feather the board to flat if required absorbing more through your legs than your back. Ride away straight for a short while before speed checking to create a more fluid looking straight air.

Key Check Points

  1. Prepare for the grab by riding in slightly lower than normal
  2. Pop or ollie to assist in bringing the board up for the grab
  3. Don’t absorb into the grab on the lip of the kicker. Pop or ollie and then grab
