James Streater, ISTD Coach and Guide

FOUNDER & OWNER

James

Maverix was established in 2008 with a simple idea: snowboarding should be about more than just getting from A to B. Over the years, that idea has developed into two sides of the business β€” year-round snowboard coaching in the UK and small-group winter holidays in Europe.

In the UK, Maverix works with riders through private and small-group coaching, covering everything from piste performance and moguls to freestyle, flatland and groundtricks.

In Europe, Maverix takes a different approach. Small groups, local resort knowledge and flexible plans allow the riding to follow the conditions rather than a fixed itinerary.

Experience that counts
James has been riding and coaching for more than 25 years and holds senior snowboard teaching qualifications across four countries:
πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ BASI Level 4 ISTD β€” International Snowsport Teacher Diploma
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ AASI Level 3 ISIA
πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή Γ–SSV Diploma Snowboardlehrer
πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French Carte professionnelle

He also holds a BA (Hons) in Business Studies and previously worked in Marketing and Public Relations with brands including Aston Martin and Hewlett-Packard. That combination of technical knowledge, international experience and a background in communication and business has shaped the way Maverix operates today.

The People Matter

Snowboarding is better with people you know. A big part of Maverix has always been the people. The riders who turn up regularly, the friendships that develop, the familiar faces on the snow and the new riders who gradually become part of the group.

That creates a different kind of environment. Riders get to know each other, become comfortable trying things, encourage each other and share in the inevitable successes, failures and stupid ideas that come with challenging yourself on a board.

It's also not about creating a group where everyone has to fit the same mould. Some riders are focused on progression, some want to learn new tricks, and some just want to ride better and have a laugh. What brings them together is a shared passion for snowboarding.

Over time, those regular sessions can turn into something more. Riders come back year after year, friendships develop and people end up riding together outside of Maverix sessions too. Some have been part of the Maverix community for many years.

That's something I value as much as the coaching itself. Good coaching can help someone become a better rider. Good people make you want to keep coming back, riding together and sharing more of what snowboarding has to offer.
