As Maverix expands its operations with your needs, we found that increasingly you guys are looking to develop their understanding of the backcountry. This may be a short introduction to off-piste safety on one of our mountain courses or a full on tour in the backcountry with a local guide. The most common problem with developing your off-piste skills is the equipment is very expensive. A decent transceiver is going to cost just under £300 and a basic shovel and probe are about £40-£50 each.
That’s just the essentials. That cost makes it all too easy to not bother to take the right equipment off-piste. Plus don’t get fooled into thinking just because you can see the groomed piste, your safe. I got caught in a slab avalanche in Verbier within sight of the piste back in 2005. Luckily it was a minimal slide and I was not fully buried. It does give you a new found respect for the snow and how you should always be prepared and get the right training, to not only save your life but your buddies.
This is why Maverix is developing a new off-piste awareness programme and is offering hire of essential equipment outside of European courses, allowing riders to benefit from this equipment without the cost.
